Adding Clarity in a Politically Charged Atmosphere

Adding Clarity to Words and Phrases: sometimes, changing a letter or two makes the true meaning all the more evident
A recent poll (see: AP Poll: Bush Seen Decisive, Kerry Smart) indicates that Americans view Bush as decisive. In fact, 67 percent believes this is so. If you change "ec" in decisive to "iv" you would get divisive. We are willing to bet that more Americans would find divisive a more accurate description of Bush than decisive. Do you agree?

Which do you think would be a more accurate characterization of the assessment of the preemptive regime change in Iraq: "It's a slam dunk!" or "It's a slam drunk!"

In any case, we're pretty sure we're not the only ones to think these subtle word changes help to clarify all the banter that gets volleyed back and forth during this politically charged season.

Democracy Is Best Taught by Example, Not by War

Is freedom of speech too easily trounced upon?
Project Billboard, a bay area anti-war group has a lease with Clear Channel Communications to place billboard ads on the side of the Marriot Hotel, in Times Square and scheduled to place an ad next month (depicted in the inset), when the Republican National Convention takes place.
Clear Channel rejected the billboard ad. According to Mr. Meyer, president and chief executive of Clear Channel, "We have no political agenda," Meyer said. "It's the bomb imagery we objected to."

Fair is fair, or so it should be. Another ad (shown this time with the outline of a Dove) was also rejected.
Incidentally, during the 2000 and 2002 election cycles, Clear Channel and its officials contributed over $300,000 in unregulated money, almost all of it to Republicans, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, an organization in Washington that monitors political contributions.

How Very Convenient Mr. Bush

We all know about George Bush was reported as going AWOL while he was enlisted for service in the Texas Air National Guard. It's been very recently disclosed by the Pentagon that the records in dispute have been inadvertently destroyed. These destroyed records cover three months during a period between 1972 and 1973 where Mr. Bush's claims of service are in question. According to the Pentagon, these records were ruined in 1996 and 1997 by the Defense Finance and Accounting Service during a project to salvage deteriorating microfilm. No back-up paper copies could be found, it added in notices dated June 25.

The loss was announced by the DoD's Office of Freedom of Information and Security Review in letters to The New York Times. The disclosure that the payroll records had been destroyed came in a letter signed by C. Y. Talbott, chief of the Pentagon's Freedom of Information Office, who wrote.

"The Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) has advised of the inadvertent destruction of microfilm containing certain National Guard payroll records."... "In 1996 and 1997, DFAS engaged with limited success in a project to salvage deteriorating microfilm. During this process the microfilm payroll records of numerous service members were damaged, including from the first quarter of 1969 (Jan. 1 to March 31) and the third quarter of 1972 (July 1 to Sept. 30). President Bush's payroll records for these two quarters were among the records destroyed. Searches for backup paper copies of the missing records were unsuccessful."

Bryan Hubbard, a Defense finance agency spokesperson, said the destruction occurred as the office was trying to unspool 2,000-foot rolls of fragile microfilm. Mr. Hubbard said he did not know how many records were lost or why the loss had not been announced before.

The lost payroll records might have answered questions about whether Bush fulfilled his legal commitment. Among the issues still disputed is why, according to released records, Mr. Bush was suspended from flying on Aug. 1, 1972.

Now, USA4Kerry.com wants to ask you to do some investigative research of your own, to uncover other "convenient" occurrences for Mr. Bush; and report it here. In this way, you can help the Kerry Media Corps highlight pointed facts and information as they write/communicate to Editors of publications and broadcast networks. It is important to make sure we have our facts correct, and to present information objectively.
